Why this exists

A title is not a job. Scope is the job.

The same executive title means very different things at a two million dollar community nonprofit and a two hundred million dollar national organization. When a job description borrows an enterprise title for a hands on role, the search attracts the wrong candidates, the offer disappoints, and the hire often leaves within a year.

This resource matches each executive role to your organization's actual budget, staff size, and complexity, so the description you write reflects the job that truly exists.

Path one: start with a role

Select a position, then choose your organization size. You will see how the role's scope, team, board interaction, and measures of success change at that scale.

Path two: start with your size

Select your budget and staff range, then choose the position. The resource tailors responsibilities and requirements to what your organization can realistically support.

    Why organization size matters

The same title, six different jobs

A Chief Development Officer at a small nonprofit personally writes grants and manages donors. At a national organization, the same title leads a department of forty, sets a multi channel revenue strategy, and sits on the executive team. Writing one description for both roles guarantees a poor match. Anchor the role to your tier first, then define the work.

Administrators can adjust the budget and staff thresholds. These tiers are a starting framework, not a rule. A high complexity organization may sit one tier above its budget, and a lean operation may sit one tier below its headcount.
